My girls and I had never heard of Mahjong until this year. A friend of ours said she had been playing it and loved it. She suggested I host a Mahjong party and she would teach everyone how to play.
So we planned the event and invited 12 people. We had three tables for players. For me, I was looking forward to all the cute decor, the food, and everything that went along with the party more than the actual game. But after we started figuring out how to play, we found it was actually a lot of fun. From that point on, we were hooked.
I decided to create this website to teach people about Mahjong and answer all the questions we all had when we were first learning. I hope you enjoy this site, and I hope you find it useful.

The Mahjong Guide helps beginners learn American mahjong in a practical order: recognize the tiles, understand the card, practice turns and calls, then make better decisions at the table. The goal is to make an unfamiliar game easier to enjoy with friends.
We also explore other mahjong variations. Those articles identify the version being discussed because American card play, Hong Kong mahjong, and Japanese riichi use different winning and scoring rules.
Our Approach
We aim for clear explanations, useful examples, and a distinction between established rules and table preferences.
