American Mahjong Endgame Strategy
The endgame begins when the wall is short, several hands are partly exposed, and many tile copies are visible. Draw opportunities are limited, so a late decision must account for both your remaining completion path and the danger of helping another player win.
Recalculate before every late discard
A tile that looked harmless earlier may now complete a visible pattern. Compare the discard with each opponent's exposures, recent calls, and likely missing groups. Also count how many copies remain unseen before deciding that your own needed tile is still live.
Offense and defense late in the hand
Continue pressing
Your hand is close, required natural tiles remain available, and the necessary discards are reasonably safe.
Shift toward defense
Your hand is blocked or distant while an opponent shows a coherent near-complete structure.
Late-game discard review
- Check whether the tile connects to any exposed number sequence or honor group.
- Notice whether matching copies have already been called or discarded.
- Consider holding a dangerous tile when your own hand is no longer realistic.
- Avoid breaking a safe completed group merely to preserve a speculative hand.
- Track the final wall draws and last-discard procedure used by the table.
- Verify the full card line before announcing mahjong.
A wall game can be the correct outcome
Forcing a dangerous discard to preserve a remote winning chance is not automatically good strategy. When the wall is nearly exhausted and your hand is blocked, preventing an opponent's likely win may be the strongest available result.
Endgame questions
Should I keep drawing for a dead hand?
You continue participating according to the rules, but strategically you may prioritize safe discards when the hand cannot be completed.
Is a previously discarded tile always safe?
No. Later exposures or changed hand direction can make the same tile relevant. Reevaluate current evidence.
What should I do before declaring mahjong?
Check the exact line, tile count, group sizes, suit relationships, concealed status, and joker placement before exposing the rack.
