Joker Dependence in American Mahjong Hands
Jokers can complete eligible groups of three or more matching tiles, but a hand becomes fragile when too many unfinished groups depend on them. Strong strategy treats jokers as support, not as a substitute for evaluating natural tile availability.
Joker Support and Joker Dependence
Joker Support
Natural tiles establish the hand, while one or two jokers improve speed or protect a difficult kong or quint.
Joker Dependence
Several groups remain incomplete, natural copies are scarce, and the hand requires more jokers than are realistically likely to reach the rack.
Measure Joker Dependence
- Identify every group that is eligible to contain a joker.
- Separate complete natural groups from incomplete groups.
- Count how many jokers the rack would need if no additional natural copies arrive.
- Check whether exposed jokers can be exchanged later.
- Remember that singles and pairs must remain natural.
- Compare the hand with a line that uses the same natural core more efficiently.
Quints Need Special Attention
A five-tile quint normally requires at least one joker because only four natural copies of an ordinary tile exist. A quint hand may therefore have legitimate built-in joker dependence, but the rest of the rack should still be evaluated for natural bottlenecks.
Exposed Jokers Change the Calculation
A joker visible in an opponent's eligible exposure may later be exchangeable if you draw or hold the matching natural tile and complete the exchange legally on your turn. Treat that possibility as an opportunity, not a guarantee. The exposure can change, the needed natural tile may be discarded, or another player may exchange first.
Joker-Dependence Questions
How many jokers are too many to need?
There is no universal number. Judge the remaining wall, natural copies, exposed exchange opportunities, and whether another hand has a more realistic path.
Does holding two jokers make every hand strong?
No. They cannot repair incorrect suits, blocked natural pairs, or a line that does not match the rack.
Should I expose a joker early?
Only when the call materially advances a valid hand and the information cost is acceptable.
