Mahjong Flower Tiles Explained
Most American mahjong sets include eight flower tiles decorated with different plants, seasons, people, numbers, or scenes. Despite varied artwork, standard American play normally treats all flowers as interchangeable natural tiles.
What interchangeable means
If a card line requires two flowers, any two natural flower tiles satisfy that group. Matching artwork, seasons, or corner numbers are not normally required.
Flowers by group size
Single flower
Must be natural. A joker cannot replace it.
Pair of flowers
Any two natural flowers may form the pair.
Three or more flowers
Use the exact count printed on the card and verify current joker rules before substituting.
Flower handling
- Separate flowers from one bam.
- Count the flowers in the set before play.
- Remember that flowers may normally be passed in the Charleston.
- Do not call an ordinary discard merely to make a pair.
- Check the exact number printed in the hand.
American flowers differ from other variants
Some variants expose and replace flowers as bonus tiles. American mahjong uses flowers as regular components printed directly on the card.

Why American Mahjong Flowers Are Easy to Misunderstand
Many tile sets print seasons, plants, numbers, or Chinese characters on their flower tiles, which can make them look like eight different identities. In standard American mahjong play, the flower tiles are generally interchangeable unless a specific rule source says otherwise. A printed flower position on the card asks for the required number of flowers, not for a particular season or blossom.
Flowers stay in the active rack. Drawing one does not trigger the replacement-draw procedure used in several other mahjong variants. A flower can be passed during the Charleston when the pass is otherwise legal, discarded during play, or called from a discard when it completes an eligible exposed group or mahjong. The current card determines how many flowers a hand needs and how they are grouped.

Flowers in the Charleston
A flower may be valuable when several candidate lines require flowers. Passing one is a strategy decision, not an automatic rule.
Drawing a Flower
Add it to the rack and continue the normal turn. Do not draw a replacement tile merely because the tile is a flower.
Calling a Discarded Flower
The call must create the exact eligible group shown by the hand or complete mahjong. A player cannot call a flower simply because the rack may need it later.
Flower Tile Check
- Confirm that all intended flower tiles are included in the active set.
- Keep spare blanks and replacement pieces separate.
- Read F on the card as a flower position.
- Count the required flowers before protecting every flower in the rack.
- Remember that flowers cannot be replaced by jokers when they appear as singles or pairs.
