American mahjong discards should remain visible in the center of the table after they are named and released. A clear discard area helps players recognize the most recent tile, track unavailable copies, evaluate calls, and avoid arguments about what was played.
Clear placement versus a messy discard field
Clear placement
Tiles remain face up, separated enough to identify, and near the center without covering the wall or another discard.
Messy placement
Tiles overlap, disappear under racks, or blend into a pile, making calls and defensive tracking harder.
Complete a discard cleanly
Select the tile
Remove it from the rack without exposing neighboring tiles.
Name it clearly
Use the suit and number or the correct honor name.
Place it face up
Set it in the shared discard area where all players can see it.
Release the tile
Once the discard is final under the applicable rule, do not retrieve it.
Allow the call window
Pause long enough for an eligible player to call before the next draw proceeds.
Keep the center readable
