A hand is “one away” when one additional legal tile would complete a valid line on the current American mahjong card. The phrase sounds simple, but a rack can be one away in several very different ways. It may need one exact natural tile for a pair, any one of several matching tiles for a joker-eligible kong, or one tile that also requires a legal rearrangement of the concealed rack.
One away means one legal completion
Count the rack against one exact card line. Every suit relationship, group size, flower, wind, dragon, year digit, exposure, and concealed designation must already be correct except for one missing position. A rack that contains thirteen attractive tiles but still needs two structural changes is not one away.
Jokers can make a rack look closer than it is. A joker may fill an eligible matching group of three or more, but it cannot complete a single, pair, or unlike sequence. Identify the missing structural position before deciding that the hand is ready.
Three common one-away situations
Single exact wait
The hand needs one specific natural tile, often the mate to a pair. Only the remaining copies of that tile can win.
Multiple-tile wait
More than one tile can complete the line because the rack can be arranged in several legal ways or an eligible group accepts different natural completions.
Joker-assisted wait
A natural tile or joker can complete an eligible pung, kong, quint, or sextet, provided the hand is not restricted by another rule.
How to verify that you are one away
- Choose one exact line on the current card.
- Separate the rack into the card's printed groups.
- Count all thirteen held tiles and any exposures.
- Confirm the suit-color relationship.
- Check whether the hand must remain concealed.
- Mark every position that must be natural.
- List every tile that would create a complete legal hand.
- Remove tiles already visible in exposures and discards from the availability estimate.
One away does not always mean likely to win
A hand waiting on one pair tile may technically be one away while all remaining copies are visible or held. Another hand may be two away but have many live tiles and several pivot options. Use distance, availability, and flexibility together rather than treating “one away” as an automatic reason to keep pushing.
