American Mahjong Winds and Dragons Hands
Winds and dragons are honor tiles, meaning they do not carry ordinary suit numbers. Hands built around them can become powerful when the rack contains natural pairs or repeated honors, but they also become easier for opponents to read once exposed.
Honor-tile building blocks
- Winds
- East, South, West, and North are four distinct tiles.
- Dragons
- Red, green, and white dragons may appear alone or in groups and can be linked to suits in card notation.
- Pairs
- Natural honor pairs are valuable because jokers cannot complete them.
- Exposures
- An exposed wind or dragon group can reveal a narrow hand direction quickly.
When an honor-heavy hand is realistic
- You begin with multiple natural pairs or repeated honors.
- The current card offers more than one compatible line.
- Few required honors have been discarded.
- Your suit tiles support the non-honor portion of the hand.
- You can delay revealing the exact direction when useful.
Winds and dragons questions
Are all winds interchangeable?
No. East, South, West, and North are different tiles unless the card line uses a flexible notation that permits a choice.
Are dragons interchangeable?
No. Red, green, and white dragons are distinct, though card color notation may connect a dragon to a suit.
Should I always keep honor pairs?
Keep them long enough to compare realistic hands, but release them when they no longer support a viable direction.
