What Is a Blocked Hand in American Mahjong?
A blocked hand is a hand that can no longer be completed because one or more required natural tiles are unavailable. All copies may be visible in exposures and discards, or the rack may depend on a pair, single, or mixed group that a joker cannot replace. Recognizing the block early prevents wasted draws and dangerous late discards.
Natural-tile bottlenecks create most blocks
Pairs, singles, and unlike groups must be completed naturally. If a line requires a pair of 7 Dots and all four 7 Dots are already visible outside your rack, the hand is impossible even if every larger group remains flexible.
A joker can rescue an eligible matching pung, kong, quint, or sextet, but it cannot repair the blocked natural position.

At least one legal completion remains unseen. The hand may be unlikely, but it is still possible.

No legal copy remains for a required natural position, or an existing exposure prevents every remaining compatible line.
What to do when a hand blocks
Confirm the evidence
Count visible copies and recheck the exact card requirement.
Search for a pivot
Look for another line that accepts the rack and all existing exposures.
Revalue every tile
Keep tiles that support the backup line and release isolated commitments.
Shift toward defense
If no viable pivot exists, prioritize safer discards and avoid feeding visible hands.
Learn from the block
After the game, identify when the critical copies first became unavailable.
Blocked-hand warning signs
- All copies of a needed pair tile are visible.
- A required single has already appeared four times.
- An exposure locks the rack into a line whose natural bottleneck is gone.
- A mixed wind or year group cannot be repaired with a joker.
- The only remaining completion would violate concealed status.
- Several useful tiles were discarded before the block was noticed.

Is a blocked hand automatically dead?
Not necessarily. “Blocked” often describes strategic impossibility, while a dead hand is a formal rules status. The player may continue drawing and discarding unless formally declared dead under the applicable rules.
Can a joker unblock the hand?
Only when the missing position is inside an eligible matching group of three or more.
Should I expose a backup group immediately?
Usually verify the complete backup line first. A rushed exposure can eliminate other pivots.
