What to Do After Calling a Mahjong Tile
Calling a discard interrupts the normal clockwise draw sequence. The caller takes the most recent discard, exposes the complete matching group, and then discards one tile without drawing from the wall. Because several actions happen quickly, this is a common moment for incorrect group sizes, extra draws, and tile-count errors.
The Correct Sequence After a Call
Announce the Call Clearly
Say the group type or declare mahjong before the next player completes a draw.
Take Only the Most Recent Discard
Move the claimed tile to your rack. An older discard cannot be retrieved.
Expose the Complete Group
Place the claimed tile with the matching natural tiles and any legal jokers. The full group must be visible.
Verify Group Size and Identity
Confirm that a pung has three, a kong has four, and any larger group matches the current-card spacing.
Discard One Tile
Do not draw from the wall. Choose a discard from the remaining concealed rack and announce it clearly.
Resume From the Caller
The player to the caller's right takes the next turn, so seats between the original discarder and caller may be skipped.

Do Not Draw After an Ordinary Call
The claimed discard replaces the draw for that turn. Taking a wall tile after exposing the called group gives the caller an extra tile and disrupts the table's count. Build the habit of moving directly from exposure to one discard.

Can I change which group I expose after taking the discard?
Only within the table's permitted correction window and before subsequent play makes the action final. Use the current official rule and agreed table procedure.
