American Mahjong Concealed Hands Explained
A concealed American mahjong hand must remain unexposed until the winning declaration. The card identifies concealed lines with a concealed designation, and that restriction changes how the player may use discards, calls, and visible groups during the hand.
Concealed means no ordinary exposure calls
You may not call another player's discard to expose a pung, kong, quint, or other working group for a concealed hand. You continue drawing from the wall and discarding normally. The final winning tile may be claimed when the rules and printed hand permit it, but the completed hand must still match the card exactly.
Legal and illegal concealed-hand actions
Legal
Draw from the wall, discard normally, exchange an eligible natural tile for a joker in another player's exposure, and use jokers in eligible groups of three or more within your hidden rack.
Illegal
Call a discard to expose part of the hand, reveal a working group early, or treat the concealed label as optional because the tile combination otherwise matches.
Protect a concealed direction
- Confirm the line is marked concealed before committing.
- Separate pair and single requirements that jokers cannot fill.
- Track whether needed natural tiles are already exposed or heavily discarded.
- Avoid making an automatic call simply because a matching discard appears.
- Recheck the full line before declaring mahjong.
Concealed does not mean jokerless
A concealed hand may still use jokers in eligible groups of three or more unless the printed hand or rules impose another restriction. Concealed refers to exposure status, not automatically to the absence of jokers.

A final discard may generally be claimed for mahjong when it completes the exact legal hand. Verify the current rules and card notation followed by your group.
Can I exchange for a joker and remain concealed?
Yes. A legal joker exchange does not expose your own rack.
What if I exposed a group by mistake?
The hand may become invalid or dead under the accepted rules. Pause play and apply the table's established correction procedure.
