American Mahjong Seating Order Explained
American mahjong uses the four wind names—East, North, West, and South—to identify seats and establish the starting player. The labels help organize the deal and opening turn, but they do not change which tiles a player may collect on the card.
Seat Names Organize the Table
East is the opening player. The remaining wind labels provide a consistent way to identify the other seats and discuss rotation. Some groups use dice or wind tiles to assign seats; others choose East and place the remaining players according to their established table convention.
Because local seating customs vary, the most important step is to make the arrangement explicit before the walls are broken.
Seat Wind and Tile Wind Are Different

Wind Tile
Is a physical honor tile used in card hands. Your seat does not limit which wind tiles you may collect.

- Choose a method for selecting East.
- Assign the remaining wind seats consistently.
- Confirm the direction of play around the table.
- Place racks and walls so every seat has equal room.
- Agree on how East will rotate after a game.
- Record the convention if the group plays regularly.

Does seating change the hand I can play?
No. All players may choose any legal line on the current card.
Must seats be assigned with dice?
