American Mahjong Any Like Numbers Hands

Any Like Numbers hands use the same rank repeated across two or three suits. The chosen number may change from one card line to another, but every numbered group must preserve the printed suit-color relationship and group size.

The number stays the same while the suits change

A line may require matching groups of one chosen rank in different suits. If the selected rank is 6, every numbered group represents sixes; the printed colors tell you whether those sixes must be one, two, or three different suits.

Flowers, winds, or dragons may appear beside the numbered groups. Treat each printed group separately and do not let the repeated rank blur the card's spacing.

How to read an Any Like Numbers line

  • Choose one rank from 1 through 9.
  • Assign every printed color to a suit.
  • Keep that same rank in every numbered group.
  • Respect pairs, pungs, kongs, and other printed group sizes.
  • Check whether the line is exposed or concealed.
  • Use jokers only in eligible matching groups of three or more.

Flexible choices and fixed requirements

Usually flexible

The chosen rank and, where allowed, the mapping of printed colors to suits.

Always fixed

The group sizes, suit relationship, honors, flowers, exposure status, and natural-tile requirements printed on the line.

Any Like Numbers questions

Can different groups use different numbers?

No. The defining feature is that all numbered groups use the same selected rank.

Can jokers represent the chosen number?

They may be used in eligible matching groups of three or more, but never in singles or pairs.

Does the physical ink color of a tile matter?

No. Card colors describe suit relationships, not the printed color on the tile face.
