Can You Add a Joker to an Existing Exposure?
In standard American mahjong play, a player does not normally insert a joker into an already completed exposure simply to free a natural tile. The familiar exchange works the other way: a player holding the matching natural tile may replace an exposed joker and take that joker into the rack.
The Direction of the Exchange Matters
An exposed joker is available because the group is already public and the natural matching tile can take its exact place. The exchange preserves the visible group while transferring the joker to the player making the exchange.
Putting a joker into a natural exposure would create a new strategic option after the group was settled and would release a natural tile without the recognized exchange condition.
