How to Play American Mahjong With Three Players

American mahjong is designed for four players, but three people can still play by agreeing on a consistent variation. The main challenge is not the hand patterns; it is replacing the missing player's role in seating, walls, and Charleston passes.

Agree on the variation before dealing

There is no single universally used three-player procedure. Choose the Charleston method, wall arrangement, dealer rotation, and scoring treatment before tiles are mixed.

Two common approaches

Skip the Charleston

Deal normal hands and begin with East's first discard. This is simple and avoids awkward pass geometry, but players receive less opportunity to shape their racks.

Use a modified Charleston

Create a three-person passing pattern agreed by the table. Every pass should remain simultaneous and each player should receive exactly three tiles.

Rules to settle

  • How many walls will be built and who maintains the unused side?
  • Will the Charleston be omitted or modified?
  • How will East rotate after each game?
  • Will all calls and joker exchanges use normal rules?
  • How will scoring account for only three payers?
  • What happens if a disagreement arises about the variation?

What usually stays the same

The annual card
Winning hands still match one valid line exactly.
Tile counts
East begins with 14 tiles and the others with 13.
Calls and exposures
Normal restrictions generally remain in force.
Joker rules
Jokers still cannot represent singles or pairs and may be exchanged under normal timing.

Three-player questions

Is three-player American mahjong official tournament play?

Standard organized play is built around four players. A three-player game is a social adaptation.

Should an empty fourth rack be used?

Some groups use it only to preserve table geometry or manage walls. It should not create an uncontrolled hidden hand.

Is strategy different with three players?

Yes. Fewer opponents change discard circulation and visible information, so experience may not translate exactly from a four-player table.
