Can You Call for a Concealed Hand?
A concealed American mahjong hand cannot make ordinary exposures. You must draw the needed tiles yourself and keep the rack hidden. The key exception comes at the end: a discard may be called when it completes the concealed hand for mahjong.
What concealed status prohibits
Calling a discard for a pung, kong, quint, or sextet would create an exposure and break the hand's concealed requirement. Even when the exposed group appears to match part of the printed line, the hand no longer qualifies if the card marks it concealed.
Joker exchanges are also unavailable when they would require exposing part of your own concealed hand. Concealed play demands patience, careful discard tracking, and a willingness to switch when too many essential natural tiles are visible.
How a concealed hand reaches mahjong
Keep the rack hidden
Do not claim discards for intermediate groups.
Build through draws
Use natural draws and any legal joker exchanges that do not expose your hand.
Reach one tile away
Confirm the remaining tile and the exact card line.
Call the winning discard
If another player discards the needed tile, announce mahjong rather than an ordinary group call.
Reveal and verify
Display the complete hand and confirm concealed status, grouping, and joker placement.

Taking a discard to expose a group before the hand is complete violates the concealed designation.

Taking the final discard to complete the whole hand is permitted under standard American play.
