American Mahjong Tile Set Inventory Checker

Use this inventory checker before buying, storing, lending, or setting up an American mahjong set. Enter the number of tiles in each family, then compare the active playing inventory with the common 152-tile American configuration. Retail sets may include extra replacement blanks or spare pieces, so those are tracked separately.

Count the Active Playing Tiles

The common 152-tile inventory contains 108 suit tiles, 16 winds, 12 dragons, 8 flowers, and 8 jokers. Keep extra blanks or replacement pieces outside that active total.

Active Tiles vs. Spare Tiles

Active Playing Inventory

These are the tiles shuffled into the walls and used during play. The common American total is 152.

Replacement or Extra Pieces

Blank or duplicate spares remain outside the game unless they intentionally replace a missing active tile.

Finish the Physical Inspection

  • Confirm four copies of every numbered dot, bam, and crak.
  • Confirm four North, East, West, and South winds.
  • Confirm four red, four green, and four white dragons.
  • Separate flowers from jokers and spare blanks.
  • Check backs, thickness, and wear for mismatched replacements.
  • Store verified spares in a clearly labeled compartment.
