When to Use a Joker in American Mahjong
A joker can rescue a difficult group, accelerate an exposure, or keep several hands alive at once. Its value comes from flexibility. The strongest use is therefore not always the earliest use. A player should compare the joker’s current job with the other groups it may need to support later.
Use Jokers Where Natural Tiles Are Hardest to Find
A joker is most valuable in an eligible pung, kong, quint, or sextet that depends on a scarce natural tile. It is less valuable when several natural copies of the needed tile remain unseen and the group is already easy to complete.
Singles and pairs must stay natural, so protect the natural tiles required for those positions. Do not spend a natural pair tile merely because a joker could replace it elsewhere.
Strong Joker Use vs. Weak Joker Use
Strong Use
The joker completes or stabilizes a difficult eligible group, preserves natural tiles for pairs, and keeps the hand connected to a realistic backup line.
Weak Use
The joker fills an easy group too early, locks the rack into one fragile direction, or substitutes for a natural tile that would be more useful in a pair or alternate hand.

Confirm Eligibility
Check that the printed group contains at least three identical tiles and permits joker use.
Protect Natural-Only Positions
Identify singles and pairs that cannot be repaired with a joker.
Measure Scarcity
Count visible natural copies of the tile the joker would represent.
Compare Alternate Jobs
Ask whether another group, backup hand, or quint will need the joker more.
Commit Only When Helpful
Use the joker when it meaningfully improves completion odds or legal exposure timing.
