Jokers are powerful because they can complete eligible groups, but their best use depends on timing and structure. A joker placed too early may reveal your direction, while a joker saved too long may fail to improve a group that needs it now.
Use jokers with purpose
- Reserve natural tiles for singles and pairs that jokers cannot replace.
- Place jokers in groups where they preserve multiple hand possibilities.
- Consider whether exposing a joker creates an easy exchange for opponents.
- Watch exposed groups for legal exchange opportunities.
- Do not treat a joker as proof that a difficult hand is realistic.
Natural tile or joker?
Keep the natural tile
Prefer the natural tile when it may be needed for a pair, a single, or another candidate hand.
Use the joker
Use the joker when it completes an eligible group and frees a natural tile with greater strategic value elsewhere.
Plan exchanges before revealing
When you expose a group containing a joker, opponents may later exchange the matching natural tile for it. The exposure may still be correct, but include that possibility in the decision rather than treating the joker as permanently yours.

Should I expose immediately to use a joker?
Only when the call clearly improves your path and the target hand permits exposure. Concealment and information costs still matter.
Is a joker always better than a natural tile?
No. Natural tiles can serve pairs and singles, and they do not invite an exchange from an exposed group.
Should I take every available joker exchange?
Take it when it improves your hand without causing a larger strategic problem. An exchange is optional, not automatically best.
