A practical beginner progression

  1. Identify every tile family. Learn dots, bams, craks, winds, dragons, flowers, and jokers by sight.
  2. Understand the objective. Read a hand on the card as groups, pairs, singles, suits, and number patterns.
  3. Follow setup and play. Practice building walls, dealing, completing the Charleston, drawing, and discarding.
  4. Make legal calls. Know when a discard may be claimed, what must be exposed, and when jokers may be used or exchanged.
  5. Develop table speed. Improve recognition and decision-making without rushing accuracy.

What beginners do not need to memorize

You do not need to memorize the entire annual card before playing. You do not need to calculate every opponent's exact hand. You also do not need a complicated defensive system during your first games. Keep the card visible, ask for a slower instructional table, and concentrate on legal play, clear calls, and a small group of promising hands.
