Pair Burden in American Mahjong Hands
Pairs are often the hardest positions in an American mahjong hand because they must be made with natural tiles. A line containing several pairs may look close on the rack, yet be much harder than a line with larger groups that can accept jokers.
Why Pairs Create Pressure
A pung or kong may be completed with a joker when the card permits, but a pair has no substitute. If two or three copies of the required tile are already visible, the remaining path can become extremely narrow.
Pair burden is not just the number of pairs. It also depends on whether you already hold both tiles, whether the needed tiles overlap another possible hand, and whether visible information suggests that the remaining copies are still live.
Manageable and Dangerous Pair Burden
Manageable
You already hold complete pairs, the remaining pair tiles are live, and the rest of the hand has flexible eligible groups.
Dangerous
Several natural pairs are incomplete, visible copies are accumulating, and no connected alternate hand preserves the rack.
Before Choosing a Pair-Heavy Hand
- Mark every required pair on the card line.
- Count how many pair tiles you already hold naturally.
- Scan the discard field and exposures for visible copies.
- Identify which incomplete pair is most vulnerable.
- Compare the hand with a line using more joker-eligible groups.
- Set a point when you will switch if the natural tiles do not appear.

Does one completed pair make a pair-heavy hand safe?
Not necessarily. Evaluate every required pair and the availability of each remaining natural tile.
Can I call a discard to expose a pair?
No. A pair cannot normally be exposed during ordinary play, although a winning discard may complete the pair position of a valid mahjong.
Should beginners avoid all pair-heavy hands?
No. They should understand the risk and prefer them when the natural pairs are already strong or clearly live.
