Who Goes First in American Mahjong?
East goes first in American mahjong. East is the dealer for the opening hand, receives fourteen tiles during the deal, and begins play by discarding one tile. The other three players begin with thirteen tiles and must draw before making their first discard unless they legally call the opening discard.
East's opening responsibilities
East is more than a seat label. Before play, East helps direct the wall break and deal. After the Charleston and any optional passes are complete, East checks that the rack contains fourteen tiles, then makes the first discard without drawing.
That first discard starts the normal call-and-turn sequence. If nobody calls it, the next player draws from the live wall and discards, and play continues around the table.

East's first action vs. later turns
Opening action
East already has fourteen tiles and therefore discards immediately. Drawing first would create an illegal fifteen-tile rack.
Ordinary turn
A player normally begins with thirteen tiles, draws one to reach fourteen, evaluates the rack, and discards back to thirteen.
Before East discards
- Make sure all passes are finished.
- Count tiles discreetly if the deal may be incorrect.
- Return any accidentally exposed rack tile to a private position if play has not started.
- Verify that jokers were not passed during the Charleston.
- Give all players a moment to organize and select candidate hands.
- State the discard clearly enough for everyone to hear.
Does East keep being dealer?
Social American mahjong groups vary in how they rotate seats or identify East between hands. Some move the dealer role, some retain physical seats while rotating responsibilities, and some use a host's established sequence. Agree before the session begins, especially when scoring or tournament procedures depend on seat order.
