Mahjong Joker Exchange Rules
An exposed joker may be exchanged for the exact natural tile it represents. The exchange is powerful because it turns a matching tile from the wall into a flexible joker, but the timing and source of the natural tile matter.
How an exchange works
- Begin your own turn by drawing normally, unless your turn began through another legal procedure.
- Hold the exact natural tile matching an exposed joker.
- Announce the exchange and place the natural tile into the exposure.
- Take the joker into your concealed hand.
- Continue the same turn and discard one tile.
Exchangeable and not exchangeable
Exchangeable
A joker in a live opponent’s valid exposure, matched by the exact natural tile from your hand.
Not exchangeable
A joker in your own concealed rack, a joker in a dead hand where rules prohibit the exchange, or a joker represented by a merely related rather than identical tile.
Before reaching for the joker
- Confirm it is your turn.
- Identify the exposure’s exact tile.
- Use a tile already in your hand, not the center discard.
- Replace the joker before discarding.
- Keep the exposure’s size and identity unchanged.
An exchange is not a call
You do not claim a discard to make a joker exchange. The matching natural tile must be in your hand during your own turn.
Exchange questions
Can a flower replace a joker used as a flower?
Yes, when the exposed group legally uses interchangeable flowers and the natural flower satisfies that exact exposure.
Can a player exchange more than one joker in a turn?
Multiple legal exchanges may generally be made during the same turn when the player holds the required natural tiles.
Can an exchange give instant mahjong?
Yes. If taking the joker completes the player’s legal hand, the player may declare mahjong.
