A standard American mahjong game is commonly played with 152 active tiles. That total combines the three numbered suits, winds, dragons, flowers, and jokers used in modern American play. Retail sets may contain more than 152 physical tiles because manufacturers often include spare blanks, extra flowers, or replacement jokers.

The numbered suits contribute 108 tiles: four copies each of numbers one through nine in Dots, Bams, and Craks. The honor tiles add 16 winds and 12 dragons. Eight interchangeable flowers and eight jokers complete the common American playing set.
Before the wall is built, separate any manufacturer extras that are not part of the table's agreed playing set. A box containing 160 or more pieces does not mean every tile should automatically enter the wall.
