Can You Call a Flower in American Mahjong?

A discarded flower may be called when it completes an eligible exposed group of three or more flowers, or when it completes a valid mahjong. It cannot ordinarily be called just to make a single or pair because those positions are not legal intermediate exposures.

Flowers behave like one tile family

American sets commonly include eight flower tiles with different pictures or numbers. For card requirements, they normally act as interchangeable members of the flower family. A printed group of three or more flowers can therefore be exposed with any suitable combination of flower tiles.

That interchangeability does not remove the group-size rule. A flower pair remains a pair, and one discarded flower cannot be claimed merely to complete it unless the call is for mahjong.

Common flower situations

Calling the third flower

If your card line permits an exposed flower pung and you hold two flowers, you may call a discarded flower and expose the three-tile group.

Calling the second flower

You may not expose a flower pair during ordinary play. You may call it only when it completes the whole hand for mahjong.

Before calling a flower

  • Locate the flower group on the exact card line.
  • Count how many flowers the group requires.
  • Confirm that the hand may be exposed.
  • Use natural flowers for any single or pair position.
  • Do not replace a single or paired flower with a joker.
  • Arrange the exposure with the called tile clearly identifiable.

Flower availability is unusually broad

Because eight physical flowers usually satisfy the same family requirement, flower groups can be easier to assemble than a numbered pair with only four copies. That advantage changes when several flowers are visible in exposures or discards, so continue tracking them rather than assuming plenty remain.
