How Spacing Works on an American Mahjong Card

Spacing on an American mahjong card divides a fourteen-tile line into structural groups. A group may be a single, pair, pung, kong, quint, mixed sequence, or another printed arrangement. Reading those boundaries correctly is essential because joker eligibility, discard calls, exposures, and final verification depend on the group—not just the individual characters.

Count inside each printed group

Repeated characters without a space normally belong to the same group. Two matching characters form a pair, three form a pung, four form a kong, and five form a quint. A mixed group can contain unlike symbols, but it must still be reproduced exactly as printed.

Do not regroup a line to fit the tiles in your rack. The card's spacing is part of the hand definition.

Why group boundaries matter

Joker use

Jokers can generally represent matching tiles only in an eligible group of three or more, not singles, pairs, or unlike sequences.

Discard calls

An ordinary call must complete a legal exposable group, not merely improve part of the line.

Verification

At mahjong, each printed group must match the corresponding tiles in size, identity, suit, and exposure status.

Parse a line before choosing it

  1. Mark every space

    Separate the line into its printed units.

  2. Count each unit

    Identify singles, pairs, pungs, kongs, quints, and mixed groups.

  3. Translate symbols

    Convert numbers, flowers, winds, dragons, and year digits into actual tiles.

  4. Apply suit colors

    Keep each color assignment consistent across its groups.

  5. Check joker eligibility

    Evaluate each group independently under the joker rules.

  6. Confirm exposure status

    Make sure any intended call is allowed by the complete line.

Group-reading safeguards

  • Never ignore a printed space.
  • Never merge two groups to create a larger joker-eligible set.
  • Never split a mixed sequence into separate matching groups.
  • Count all fourteen structural positions.
  • Keep pairs and singles natural.
  • Verify every exposure against one complete group.
  • Use the current card's legend for special notation.

Spacing questions

Can I arrange my rack differently from the card spacing?

You may organize your concealed rack privately, but the final hand must still match the exact printed groups.

Does a group of four always mean a kong?

Four matching tiles form a kong. Four unlike symbols may instead be a specific mixed group and must be read exactly as printed.

Can two adjacent pairs be treated as a kong for jokers?

No. The printed spacing defines two pairs, and both pairs must be natural.
