Mahjong Wind Tiles Explained
The four wind tiles are East, South, West, and North. American mahjong cards often group them under the shorthand NEWS. Winds may appear as singles, pairs, pungs, or kongs, but they never form a numerical run.
The four winds
- East
- Usually marked with the Chinese character for east and abbreviated E.
- South
- Marked with the character for south and abbreviated S.
- West
- Marked with the character for west and abbreviated W.
- North
- Marked with the character for north and abbreviated N.
Reading NEWS
NEWS means one North, one East, one West, and one South in the printed order. Repeated letters mean repeated copies of that exact wind. NNN is a pung of North winds, not three different winds.
Winds and joker use
Single wind
Must be natural. A joker cannot replace one wind.
Pair of winds
Both matching tiles must be natural.
Pung or larger group
Jokers may be used in an eligible group of three or more identical winds.
Recognition tips
- Learn the English abbreviations first.
- Compare all four faces side by side.
- Say the full direction when discarding.
- Do not confuse West with White Dragon.
- Check whether a line needs one of each wind or repeats of one wind.
Wind questions
Does seat wind change which hands I may play?
Not in standard American mahjong. The annual card determines legal hands.
Can winds be used as a run?
No. They are named honor tiles, not consecutive numbers.
Can I call a wind discard?
Yes, when it completes a legal exposure or completes mahjong.
