When Is a Mahjong Discard Final?
A discard becomes final when the player has completed the discard under the governing American mahjong rule—typically by clearly naming or fully releasing the tile as required by the table's recognized standard. After that point, the player cannot substitute a different tile or return the discard to the rack.
Why finality matters
Every other player makes decisions from the announced discard. Someone may call it, another player may mentally eliminate it from a possible hand, and the next player may begin reaching for the wall. Allowing a completed discard to be changed would expose information and alter those decisions unfairly.
Because local groups sometimes describe the exact completion point differently, agree to follow one recognized rule source before play. The important principle is consistency: the standard cannot change depending on whether the mistaken discard helps or hurts the player.
