American Mahjong Singles and Pairs Hands
Singles and Pairs hands are built entirely from individual tiles and natural pairs rather than pungs, kongs, or quints. Since jokers cannot be used for singles or pairs, every required tile must be collected naturally.
No joker can complete any position
Jokers are restricted to eligible groups of three or more identical tiles. A Singles and Pairs line therefore receives no direct help from jokers, even when the rack contains several of them.
Signs the section may be realistic
- Several required natural pairs are already present.
- The rack closely matches one printed line rather than the section in general.
- Few needed tiles are visible in exposures or discards.
- The hand does not require too many unrelated exact singles.
- You can preserve at least one alternative direction during the Charleston.

Pairs are valuable only in context
A natural pair can be difficult to replace, but holding every pair creates a crowded rack. Compare each pair with actual card lines and release pairs that no longer support a realistic hand.

These hands are generally concealed because singles and pairs cannot form ordinary callable exposures. Follow the exact card designation.
Should I keep jokers while pursuing this section?
Jokers cannot enter the final hand, but they may still have exchange value or support a pivot. Do not expose strategic information unnecessarily.
Why is this section considered difficult?
Every required tile must be natural, exact, and available, with no joker substitution for missing positions.
