What to Check Before You Buy
Measure the Playing Area
Measure your tabletop and allow room for racks and accessories. Compare the mat’s actual dimensions, including its corners, rather than relying on the product photo.
Balance Movement and Grip
The top surface affects how tiles move, while the backing helps keep the mat in place. Look for descriptions of both surfaces and consider your table’s finish.
Plan for Cleaning and Storage
Check the maker’s cleaning instructions and whether the mat rolls or folds. A carrying bag, if included, should fit the mat without forcing sharp creases.
Common Questions
Should a mat cover the entire table?
Choose coverage that leaves a comfortable playing area for your group. Check that racks sit securely and that the mat does not hang over the edge.
Can I wash a mahjong mat?
Follow the care instructions for the specific mat. Materials, backing, and printed surfaces can require different cleaning methods.
