What to Do When You Draw a Flower in Mahjong
In American mahjong, a flower is normally a regular playable tile. When you draw one, you do not automatically expose it or take a replacement tile as players may do in some other mahjong variants. Add it to the rack, evaluate the current card, and decide whether the flower belongs in a realistic hand.
A Flower Does Not Trigger a Replacement Draw
The drawn flower is the tile for your turn. Keep fourteen tiles while deciding, then discard one unless the flower completes mahjong. Drawing an extra replacement would create an incorrect tile count.
Evaluate the Flower in Order

Look for realistic hands that require one or more flowers.
Count Existing Flowers
A single flower may be useful, while several flowers can point more strongly toward certain card sections.
